I wish the government would develop a shopping mall at the airport with well-known international brands alongside Maldivian businesses. Give tourists more reasons to spend here before they leave.
The government could build the infrastructure and lease retail spaces to international brands, with rent paid in USD. Tourist purchases could also be priced and paid for in USD. This could generate regular rental income for the government while creating jobs and attracting additional tourist spending.
Part of the mall should be reserved for Maldivian creators and manufacturers, with affordable rents or rent-free kiosks for small local businesses. They could sell artwork, crafts, clothing and other locally made products, giving visitors something authentically Maldivian to take home.
With proper planning and transparent leasing, this could support local production and give small businesses access to customers they might otherwise struggle to reach. The goal should be to turn tourist spending into lasting income and opportunities for Maldivians.
